Halloween is fun. Waking up the next morning with red, bumpy skin is not.

Heavy makeup, face paint and glitter can clog pores and irritate skin, especially if it stays on overnight or gets rubbed off with a harsh wipe.

First, remove everything properly. Start with a cleansing balm or oil to break down the makeup, then follow with a gentle cleanser. Be soft with it. Scrubbing makes redness and breakouts worse.

For the next few days, keep things simple: gentle cleanser, a soothing moisturiser and SPF in the morning. Pause strong actives like retinol and exfoliating acids until your skin feels calm again.

If you get a breakout, resist the urge to pick. Picking is one of the main reasons spots leave dark marks behind. A small dab of a spot treatment with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can help, but only on the spot itself.

If your skin is very sore, swollen or blistering, stop using the product and speak to a pharmacist or GP. Face paint can cause reactions.

To see how your skin recovers, log it in the skin journal in Home of Skin. A quick photo each day shows how quickly it settles and helps you spot which products your skin doesn't like.
